We have just activated a new radio/telephone tower at Marion in Smyth County.  This is not a cell phone tower but a radio/telephone tower and you can use it for phone calls. Like a cell phone, no license is required for you to use this network!  Although originally conceived as a service only for business, it is now available to anyone for any legal purpose. You can use it for farming, for timbering, in any business, you can hunt with it, you can use it as a family radio/phone system and, lots of other things.  If you don't want to give the kids a cellphone give them one of these!   The range around each tower varies with the terrain but, most of them work for 40 miles or so.  Some work much farther!

The radio system which we operate has many of the characteristics of both a radio and a telephone.  The actual name for this type of radio system is trunked radio.  All towers have multiple repeaters and telephone interconnect, allowing several conversations to take place at once.  Some may be telephone calls and others may be radio calls on programmed intercoms.  All units have the ability to receive phone calls from someone with the proper access information.  For you, this means that you could call an individual directly from a phone to handle an emergency or just to make sure everything is OK.  Using intercoms that are programmed into the radios, you can call an individual directly, by radio, maybe from a base unit at home.  You can also call groups of people all at once while in the intercom mode.  These conversations are private, as are any phone calls, so that other tower users cannot monitor your conversations.
